A Ferragamo Fairy Tale - style

Ferragamo’s The Amazing Shoemaker—an exhibition that explores shoes’ starring roles in stories throughout history—is on view at the Ferragamo Museum in Florence until March 31 of next year. But for those of us who can’t scoot over to Italy for the action, the house is bringing a taste of whimsy to New York. The museum show includes contemporary pieces inspired by such stories as Cinderella and The Wizard of Oz, classical works, short films, and new fairy tales by the likes of Hamid Ziarati, Michele Mari, and Elisa Biagini. However, one can’t really talk about narrative-stealing kicks without mentioning Hermes’ winged sandals—the mythical accessories appear in the exhibition in the form of Giambologna’s sixteenth-century sculpture Mercurio. And in honor of the ancient god’s divine taste in footwear, Ferragamo has released a pair of winged calfskin sandals, which debut exclusively above. Available from May 22 through June 2, the wares are part of a larger capsule, comprising a series of story-inspired heels and tote bags, as well as a selection of silk scarves. Designed by artist Michela Petoletti, each foulard is printed with watercolors depicting scenes from shoe-centric fables.

From Wednesday, the house’s Fifth Avenue flagship will also offer signed copies of Frank Espinosa’s limited-edition graphic novel based on Mr. Ferragamo’s life (above). Proceeds from the sales will be donated to Un Cuore, Un Mondo, a nonprofit organization that provides aid to children suffering from heart disease.

Summer’s Greeting Study Abroad Fashionistas!!!

Classes are out, Finals are over! We chic young Fashionistas are on our way abroad to taste the sites of Paris, drink in the decadence of Italy, seal our fates in Spain, and get lush in London!! But seriously, how excited ARE YOU?!

Whether you are off across the Atlantic to enroll in classes or ready to storm the offices of a fabulous internship, packing is always a challenge (read all about my luggage exploits in Charles de Gaulle HERE!) Thankfully, in our post modern world, we have Street Style to guide us along our packing way.

The key to Study Abroad Fashion, as these latest Cannes Film Festival pics (courtesy Harpers Bazaar) demonstrate, is visual tocchi of color that unify your whole Fashion composition.

First, pick a color palette. This is a fantastic way to not only gauge your mood as you launch into your exciting Summer Study Abroad extravaganza, but also to find what color suits you best! Is this the summer of red and burnt orange? Green and yellow? Cool purples? Take your pick!

Second, choose the complementary base color. For Summer white is fantastic, but dirties easily on those trains that take you to and from the Alps and the seaside. Beige is a pragmatic choice, but make sure you don’t get a hue that is too dark. Caramels work well here, especially if you are looking to add leather accessories (think a cool jacket even Donatella Versace would lust after). Get skirts, one or two dresses, and a pair of pants in this color.

Third, GO SHOPPING FOR ACCESSORIES! :) This is where Step 1 comes in. The radiant red is the hue of your new sandal. Burnt orange, a magnificent blouse. Sunset yellow? That belt you’ve been coveting. And remember- jewelry, jewelry, jewelry!!

Fourth, bags. The most important part of your summer abroad experience, second only to your shoes. Why? Your shoes support you on every new cobbled road, large imposing Avenue, and passeggiata- while your bag is its perfect counterpart- holding the precious contents of the life you’ve left behind (passport, agenda, address book, iPhone, iPod), and the woman you are becoming (notebook, sketchpad, metro map, the number of that chic Milanese you just ran into at the local bar…). The most pragmatic choice is a neutral bag, but the best choice is a neutral bag that incorporates your color palette (see Step 1).

Lastly, go wild with a scarf- choose one with fantasia, a scarf that has every color under the sun to spice up any outfit. Wear it as a top, at the neck, as a headband, belt, or tie it to your bag. Of course, be prepared to take it to the beloved dry cleaner as soon as you return home. :)
